Charles Heidsieck - NV Champagne Brut Reserve
Wow, just wow 🍾
If you didn’t think that a wine and its story could both truly knock your socks off, get ready!! Charles Heidsieck was destined for greatness and his is still the smallest of the Grandes Marques champagne Houses.
"There is a rumour about me, an excitement as they say, that we will greatly benefit from"
Charles Heidsieck in a letter to his wife in 1860.
At the age of 29, Charles founded his own Champagne House, focused on superior quality and innovation, in 1851. He was ambitious and sensed opportunity and potential in the US, and soon arrived to win over the rich and famous… And win them over he did! He was desired at the most exclusive of parties and his Champagne was THE Champagne of the era. It was Americans that gave him his now infamous nickname “Champagne Charlie”. It was even Charles Heidsieck Champagne that was served on the famous Titanic. 🛳 🍾
During the American Civil War, his importer decided not to pay any outstanding invoices. While in Louisiana to collect payment, he was wrongly imprisoned as a suspected spy for nearly 4 months. The brother of his importer was so embarrassed that at the end of the Civil War he sent Charles deeds to land holdings in Colorado, which he then sold and is now the city of Denver.
What a story… 📜
To this day, Heidsieck is one of the most respected Houses in Champagne.
No day is so bad that it can’t be fixed with Champagne 🍾
”Thanks to 40% of reserve wines, the blend offers a complex, elegant, voluptuous nose with a touch of freshly baked brioche, rich toasted notes and sun-drenched fruits - mango, apricot and mirabelle plum - accented by dried fruits, pistachio and almond. On the palate the texture is reminiscent of a crisp layer of nougatine on a velvety cream pastry, filled with plump red plums and ripe cherries. The selection of reserve wines gives the wine lushness. The finish unveils notes of praline and vanilla.”
Cheers Charlie! 🍾
